In the Al-Uwaimriyah district — one of the oldest quarters of central Hofuf — stands Umm Zurainiq Mosque, a small historic mosque more than a century old, named after the old cemetery beside it. Built in the traditional way from mud, gypsum and palm trunks, it is distinguished by its cylindrical minaret with a wooden balcony, a hallmark of the Eastern Province's mosque architecture, and by interior plaster ornament on its walls, windows and arches. After prayers had lapsed there for a period, it was rehabilitated within the second phase of the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Project for the Development of Historic Mosques, expanding it from a mere thirty square metres to around 214, with room for some 94 worshippers — returning a working mosque to the neighbourhood.
