The mountain known today as Al-Shaban is a rocky rise standing apart from Al-Qarah Mountain, near the village of Al-Tuwaither east of Hofuf, and it carries another local name: 'Aba Al-Kabari'. In the old historical sources, however, 'Al-Shaban' was a name of Al-Qarah Mountain itself: the geographer Yaqut al-Hamawi recorded it as 'a mountain in Bahrain [the historic eastern coastlands], in whose caves one seeks the cool', and it is said the name — 'the sated one' — came from the palms and waters that once encircled it. As the name 'Al-Qarah' prevailed for that famous mountain, the name Al-Shaban settled on this neighbouring rise. For the caves and visiting details of the famous mountain, see the Al-Qarah Mountain page.
