Jabal Al-Qarah rises east of Hofuf in the middle of a green oasis filled with palms, and its caves, not its height, are what make it special. The mountain is a flat-topped hill of sedimentary rock carved by erosion, threaded with caves and passages that stay pleasantly cool at the height of summer and gently warm in winter. It lies within Component 01 of “Al-Ahsa Oasis, an Evolving Cultural Landscape”, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2018; Al-Ahsa is the largest oasis in the world.
History
Jabal Al-Qarah was once known as Jabal Al-Shab'an. Four historic villages surround it, Al-Tuwaithir, Al-Dalwah, Al-Tahimiyah and Al-Qarah, and the mountain takes its name from the last of them. Before air conditioning spread, its caves were where people from the nearby villages escaped the summer heat, especially during the daytime in Ramadan. In 2016 the Land of Civilisations cultural tourism project opened in part, and in January 2018 it opened officially with a tourist trail, a leisure trail and an information hall; according to 2020 coverage, the project occupies about 10% of the mountain.
What you'll see
According to the Saudipedia encyclopaedia, Jabal Al-Qarah has 12 caves of different shapes and lengths, among them Al-Nashab, Al-Naqa, Al-Eid, Al-Mahyoub and Bu Saleh. According to the Saudi Tourism Authority, these caves contain 28 long passages stretching 1.5 kilometres. In Al-Nashab cave, long, narrow, tall corridors cross one another at right angles, and its galleries rise to the top of the mountain through openings that let daylight in. You find yourself between two walls that almost touch your shoulders, then the rock opens onto a high chamber pierced by a shaft of light. According to Saudipedia, the caves stay close to 20°C even when it is over 40°C outside. Weathering has shaped mushroom-like forms in the mountain's rock, and its summit looks out over the governorate's palms and the surrounding towns.
According to the Saudi Tourism Authority, some caves are used for workshops by traditional potters. According to the Al-Yaum newspaper in 2023, the mountain park has a mosque, a café and a gift shop, and lighting and a footbridge have been installed in the mountain area.
Best time to visit
The Al-Yaum newspaper (2023) describes Jabal Al-Qarah as a year-round destination thanks to the atmosphere of its caves, and as a good spot for watching birds such as the hoopoe, the bee-eater and the bulbul during the migration season.

Jabal Al-Qarah hours and entry fees
The mountain is open daily 8:00 am – 11:00 pm (may be extended on holidays). Entry is SAR 50 for adults; one ticket covers Jabal Al-Qarah and the Land of Civilisations heritage village, and is sold through the village. Details are in the visit card above.
Visitor tips
The Saudi Tourism Authority notes that guided tours are available to introduce you to the history of Jabal Al-Qarah. A cave researcher cautions that some of the cave routes are difficult and need experts or people from the nearby areas, and the Al-Yaum newspaper advises anyone climbing the mountain to take care and go with a guide.
