At the town of Salwa in Al-Ahsa's far south-east, by the Kingdom's land gateway to Qatar, Salwa Beach stretches along the Arabian Gulf about 150 kilometres from Hofuf. Salwa falls administratively under Al-Ahsa governorate; its sands are described as among the finest on the Arabian Gulf; the dunes of the Jafurah desert border it to the west, and the area is rich in birdlife. It is a well-known sea-fishing spot and a quiet destination for family sittings and shoreline walks, and the municipality has developed the beach and its park with shades, playgrounds, a walkway and outdoor fitness equipment.
