On the eastern rim of the northern oasis, some fifteen kilometres north-east of Hofuf, stretches the massif of Kanzan Mountain — the name the history books know it by, though today it is commonly called Al-Shu'bah Mountain. A chain of sedimentary and sandy hills, it neighbours the villages of Al-Shu'bah, Al-Kilabiyah, Al-Battaliyah and Al-Jurn, and adjoins the surroundings of the ancient Jawatha Mosque on its western side. In the Kanzan area, in 1333 AH / 1915 CE, the famous Battle of Kanzan was fought in the era of King Abdulaziz, in which the King was wounded and his brother Prince Saad fell. Its clean, soft sands have made it a favourite spot for outings, dune driving and gazing over the palm groves, and Al-Ahsa Municipality is developing a major recreational park on the massif.
